The All New Mahindra Thar 2020- Is It Good enough?

The all new Mahindra Thar 2.0 has finally been unveiled to the public and looks like its definitely ready to rock the roads. No wonder that even  Mr. Anand Mahindra wants this beast in his garage which he said in his recent tweet ;). I bet you’ll want it too.

Well, this New-gen Mahindra Thar is going to launch on 2nd October 2020 and for the first time, this Mahindra’s adventure SUV will be available in both petrol and diesel engines with manual and automatic transmission options. There will be three variants: AX(Basic variant), AX(Optional), and LX(top-end variant) with 4WD as standard. The price of this beast is expected to be around 9.5 lakh to 13.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

Now, if we talk about the exterior, then the design of this newer 2.0 version is definitely larger and way more modern in terms of its looks than its predecessor. Everything on it is new, from the platform to its interiors. It’’ll be having a new factory-fitted hardtop with 18 inches alloy wheels in its top-end variant with front-facing rear seats which is making it the most practical four-seater SUV ever offered by Mahindra in Thar lineup. It will also be available with a fixed soft top and convertible top as well, along with removable doors in its lower end and optional variants with 16 inch wheels. The ground clearance of this new-gen SUV is 226mm (unladen). This whole new look of the new gen Thar seems to be inspired by the supreme off-roaders like Land Rover defender, Jeep Wrangler and the Mercedes Benz G-Wagen.

Following are the variant-wise roof options:

Talking about the interiors now, the buyers of this new Mahindra’s adventure SUV will definitely be impressed because they will be going to see loads of improvements in its cabin, be it features, quality or finish.

You’ll be getting a 7inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support and with many other features in its fully loaded variant i.e. LX. An AUX port, two USB ports and a 12V socket are also available in the front. Just under the touchscreen are the ac vents and the controls of its manual air conditioning system. The switches of the power windows in the front are just behind the gear lever which is little unusual but its fine if the variant is the-removable doors one.

You’ll be getting steering mounted audio controls with phone functions on the left and the cruise control on the right side of the steering wheel. The instrument panel on the drivers side is a very detailed MID with an analogue speedometer and a tachometer.

This new gen Mahindra Thar will be available in 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2 litre diesel engine. The 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 150bhp at 5000 rpm and a peak torque of 320Nm at 1500-3000 rpm while the 2.2 litre diesel one offers a maximum power output of 130bhp at 3750 rpm and a maximum torque of 300Nm at 1600-2800rpm which is lower in figures compared to the petrol variant respectively.

Buyers planning to buy this new gen Thar will have six colour options in which Mystic Copper, Galaxy Grey and Napoli Black are the three new shades while the Red Rage, Aquamarine and Rocky Beige shades are carried forward from the old generation model.

This Mahindra’s beast will rival the similar price ranged compact SUVs such as Toyota Urban Cruiser, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and its closest rival Force Gurkha.
